Richard "Mac" McCormack's Obituary
Richard L. “Mac” McCormack, 85, of Lorain, passed away Tuesday, March 01, 2016 at his residence while under the care of Hospice of the Western Reserve following a short illness.
Born March 21, 1930 in Montgomery, West Virginia, he lived in Elyria before moving to Lorain in the mid 1950’s. He graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1949 and attended Akron University and Lorain County Community College. Richard served in the US Marine Corp in the early 1950’s then in the US Army Reserves.
Richard served as a Police Officer for the City of Lorain for 43 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Parish, Lorain, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3, Lofton Henderson Marine Corp League, Amvets Post 20, Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 where he served with the honor guard, American Association of Law Enforcement Trainers, United States Judo Federation, International Judo Federation and the Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Federation.
He coached CYO basketball and enjoyed swimming, softball, scuba diving and was a certified rescue and underwater recovery diver. Richard was a 6th Degree Black Belt in Kodokan Judo and an 8th Degree Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu. In August of 2000, he received the United States Marshal Arts Instructor of the Year award. He was the recipient of the Policeman of the Year Award in 1980. Richard was also an instructor for the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy.
Surviving is his wife, Patricia (nee Sposato); his children, Deborah L. McCormack and Tamara J. McCormack both of Lorain, John F. (Connie) of Columbus, Ohio and Terence (Cindy) of Lorain; 7 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Billie and Mabel (nee Smitson) McCormack; and a brother, Luther.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and Friday from 4:00 – 8:00 pm in the Dovin & Reber Jones Funeral and Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, where funeral services will be held Saturday 1:00 pm in the funeral center. Rev. John Retar, pastor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Parish, Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 will conduct military honors.
