Richard J. Reber's Obituary
Richard J. Reber, age 83, of Vermilion, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018.
He was born on February 3, 1935, in Lorain, Ohio and is a 1954 graduate of Lorain High School. After high school graduation he continued his education and graduated from Columbia Gas School, Lincoln Electric School, and the Cleveland School of Welding. Richard worked for the Columbia Gas Company until beginning his employment at BF Goodrich, where he retired from in 1992 at the young age of 55. After retirement, he wanted to stay busy and worked at Drug Mart, Ridge Hill Memorial Park, and at Piazza’s Greenhouse, who was his very close friend.
He proudly served his country first, in the Naval Reserves from1952 until honorably discharged in 1957. He continued to serve his country with the United States Army from 1957 until being honorably discharged in 1960.
Richard was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, Lorain. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council #4891 of Amherst, where he was a Grand Knight and past Navigator. He was also a member of the Slovak Club, Slovenian Club, Amvets, Senior Fellowship, and the Lorain Columbian Club.
Richard was known as a “Mr. Fix-it” and enjoyed old cars.
He is survived by his daughters; Valerie Reber, of Elyria and Melanie Reber, of FL, his step-sons; David Ward, Sean Ward, Andy Ward, and Shannon Ward, step-grandchildren, and the remaining Reber Family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Ward Reber, parents, John and Anna (nee Smetana) Reber, step-son, Todd Ward, a brother, Ed Reber, and his sisters, Doris Haponek and Marilynn Thompson.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, OH. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, Pastor, will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where full military honors will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. The Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, is assisting the family with arrangements.
