Rick "Papa Rick" Gaines' Obituary
Rick Bruce Gaines, affectionately known as “Papa Rick,” 75, of Huron, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2025. He was born on November 23rd, 1949. Rick’s education began at Brush High School in Lyndhurst, Ohio. He earned an undergraduate teaching degree from Kent State University and later completed a master’s degree at Cleveland State University.
Throughout his career, Rick wore many hats. He inspired generations as a high school teacher, serving students at Brush High School, Streetsboro High School, and later at Whiting Business College in Cleveland, Ohio. He also brought joy to countless events as a mobile DJ, organized unforgettable experiences as a tour operator, and helped families build homes as a home builder. Colleagues and friends remember him for his boundless energy, genuine kindness, and the enthusiasm he poured into every endeavor.
An avid sports fan, Rick cheered on the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and The Ohio State Buckeyes, proudly wearing his team colors and sharing his passion with anyone willing to listen.
Beyond work and sport, Rick delighted in the music and community spirit of concerts and festivals, especially the lively fall festivals that dotted the Midwest each year. Those seasonal gatherings were among his favorite ways to celebrate life’s simple pleasures.
He leaves behind the love of his life, Sharlene DeSharm; children Shawn Gaines and Amber Gaines, step-children Arthur Horinek (Anne) and Angela Horinek; the light of his life his cherished granddaughter Ava DeSharm; sister Laurel McKendry (Paul); sister-in-law Laura Jones (Richard); and nephew Jason Chapman (Viola). Rick was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Alfred and Alyce (nee Rickman) Gaines.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 27th, 2025 from 11 AM until 1 PM with a service at 1 PM at Dovin & Reber Jones Funeral and Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, OH 44001.
