Robert "Dan" Barto Sr.'s Obituary
Robert D. (Dan) Barto Sr., age 84, a lifelong resident of Lorain passed away Monday, June 5, 2017.
He was born on July 13, 1932 to George and Anna Barto. Robert graduated from Lorain High School with the January 1951 Class. Upon his high school graduation he began working for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI), Avon Lake Plant.
On April 17, 1951 Robert enlisted with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After completing basic training he was deployed to Germany to serve with the 2nd. Armored Division- “Hell on Wheels”- “Cold War”. While enlisted he was the recipient of the Expert Infantry Badge, Rifle Marksmanship, National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Occupational European Medal, Good Conduct and numerous other medals. Robert was honorably discharged on March 31, 1954.
Robert served with the Elyria, Ohio based Ohio National Guard Company “D” 112th. Combat Engineers from 1956-1959. He served as a Platoon Leader and Instructor in the rank of Sergeant First Class .
After his discharge from the U.S. Army, Robert returned to CEI and received his Stationary-Steam Engineer’s License. He began working as Plant Control Room Operator in the Control Room for 36 years. After 46 ½ years total service he retired in July of 1997.
Robert enjoyed traveling with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren especially their trips to Walt Disney World in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret (nee Koble); sons, Robert D. Barto Jr, of Sheffield Village, OH, and William A. Barto, of North Port, Florida; daughter, Diane M. (Raul) Agosto, of Lorain; grandchildren, Jennifer (Reuben) Bellisario, Melissa (Antonio) Marrero, Matthew Agosto, and Allison Barto; great-grandchildren, R.J. Bellisario, Emma Bellisario, and Jaxon Marrero; and his sister, Margaret Skarupa.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna; brothers, Andy, George, Joe, and John Barto; sisters, Ann Schnur and Mildred Barto; and his daughter-in-law, Angela Barto, wife of 40 years to his son, Robert D. Barto Jr.
The Barto family will receive friends on Friday, June 9, 2017 from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral center. Rev. Fr. Craig Hovanec, Pastor of the Church of St. Peter will officiate. Military Honors will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Honor Guard.
