Ronald VanDeWeerd's Obituary
Ronald Van De Weerd, of Lexington, South Carolina, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on March 30, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on July 14, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, Ron was the son of the late Bert Van De Weerd Sr.and Gretchen Gerbrand.
A proud American, Ron answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on May 24, 1965. He was honorably discharged on August 25, 1966, forever proud of his service as a Marine.
Ron spent his working life as a professional mover, a career that suited his strong work ethic and tireless dedication. In 2006, he moved to Lexington, South Carolina, where he continued to enjoy life surrounded by family and friends.
Ron was known for his love of life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes and could often be found cheering on his team. He enjoyed visiting casinos, playing corn hole, and especially loved organizing clam bakes and pig roasts. He took pride in every detail of these gatherings—often rising at 5:00 a.m. to begin preparations.
Boating and fishing brought him joy, and he treasured time spent on the water pulling his grandchildren tubing behind the boat. Above all else, Ron was a devoted family man. His family was the heart of his world, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; his children, Ronald (Julie) Van De Weerd Jr. of Dayton, and Kim (Mike) Oswalt of Elyria; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Chris (Jim Harsa) Van De Weerd; and brothers, Bill (Cynthia) Van De Weerd, and Rollie (Charlene) Van De Weerd.
He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife of 50 years, Linda (née Nesevich) Van De Weerd; his son, Jimmy Van De Weerd of Wellington; his sister, Jackie Peery; and his brother, Bert Van De Weerd Jr.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. A funeral service will follow at 6:30 p.m. Inurnment with military honors will take place on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 12:45 p.m. at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, OH 44273.
