Ruth Sommerville's Obituary
Ruth Sommerville (nee Moser), age 80 of Oberlin, passed away peacefully the morning of Sunday, April 28, 2024, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born November 24, 1943, at home in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania to Robert and Mary (nee Randolph) Moser. Ruthie or Maw, as her friends and grandchildren referred to her, was a woman of faith, raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and remained a faithful servant of God throughout her life. Ruthie married Walter Sommerville in June of 1970. They would have celebrated their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary June 6th.
Although a shy child and young woman, Ruthie was a fierce athlete in basketball, bombardment, and baseball. She loved to jump rope, swim, and ride her bicycle. She was known for her skill as a pitcher. She spent most of her adult life caring for family as a hard-working and loving wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother. She gave of her heart to care for her maternal grandmother, mother, and mother-in-law. Ruthie was known for her big heart, generous nature, continued kindness, empathy, smile and laughter, forgiveness even when others weren’t kind to her, resilience in the face of years of ill health, and enduring faith. Her love for her family and friends was endless. She always rooted for the underdog and offered a listening and patient ear. She loved cooking, baking, gardening, feeding the humming birds, playing with her children and then grandchildren, and helping others in need. She will always be remembered for her kind deeds, love of animals and every baby she crossed paths with, contagious laughter, love of everything pink and flowery, cooking delicious pot roasts, pies, and orange clove tea.
Ruthie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Moser; her in-laws, Walter and Ella Sommerville; and her sister, Dottie Mazon. She is survived by her husband, Walter Sommerville III; her daughter and son-in-law, Holly Sommerville O’ Daley and Jason Daley; her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Matt Vodraska; her brothers and sister, Paul Moser, Jimmy Moser, and Janet Moser-Cole. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Karen Graber, Cathy Moser, Jeremy Moser, and Christian Cole. Grandma Ruthie will also be remembered in the hearts of her beloved granddaughters, Violet Daley, Addie Vodraska, and Isa Vodraska.
Ruthie’s family will receive friends on Saturday, May 11th, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Wellington Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 615 W. Herrick Ave. (Rt 18) Wellington, OH 44090. A brief Memorial Service will follow promptly at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Minister Larry Young. Any flowers or condolences may be delivered to this address between 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. on May 11th. A celebration of life picnic will also be held this summer.
