Steve N. Stevens' Obituary
Steve N. Stevens, age 92, of Elyria, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at University Hospital, Cleveland after a short illness.
Steve (Stefanos) was born on May 21, 1930, in Piraeus, Greece. At the age of eight, his family immigrated to the United States and made Campbell, Ohio their home. He graduated from Campbell Memorial High School and enrolled at Youngstown State University. After his sophomore year, Steve was drafted into the United States Army for the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany and served in the Signal Corps, completing civil engineering projects throughout Europe. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Youngstown State where he completed his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Steve began his lifelong career with Ohio Edison while still a student, starting as a draftsman, and moving on to Akron, where he met the love of his life, Mary, when they were introduced by a mutual friend. They eventually moved to Elyria where they raised their family and resided until his passing.
Steve never met a stranger. He could (and would) talk to anyone about anything, a quality that served him well in his 40+ year career at Ohio Edison, especially during his time as a manager in industrial sales. Steve was memorable, once you met him, you were unlikely to forget him. His strong personality and unique sense of humor endeared him to many. Steve was a dedicated and long-suffering fan of all Cleveland major league sports teams and opened each new season with renewed optimism.
Steve was a faithful and devoted member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lorain. He was very involved with the church, serving on the parish council, and was also a past President of AHEPA. He loved to spend time outdoors and remained active his entire life. He took up running in his 50s, and he remained an avid runner for years. After retirement, he loved going for walks and he could be found at one of the Metro Parks with his wife Mary almost every day. It was his walks in the parks where he met so many people and formed numerous lasting friendships.
What brought him the greatest joy and happiness was his family. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Mary (nee Mela) Stevens; children, Nicholas (Wendy) Stevens, of Columbus, OH, Madalene (Flavio) Ancilotti, of Milan, Italy, and Michael (Rebecca) Stevens, of San Luis Obispo, CA; grandchildren, Jimmy, Mary, Johanna, and Eleni; and his beloved sister, Christine Hamamzis, of Poland, OH. Steve loved them all as well as his extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Fotini (nee Procopides) Stevens, his godfather, Theo Mihaly, father- and mother-in-law, John and Magdalene Mela, and brother-in-law, Gary Menhorn.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 11th, 2023, from 10:00 am until the time of his funeral service at 11:00 am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain, Ohio. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst. Arrangements are under the care of Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst.
