Steven D. Phillips' Obituary
Steven D. Phillips, 63, of Lorain, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Avon Oaks Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Born on May 12, 1961, in Lorain, Ohio, he was the beloved son of William and Virginia (née Cole) Phillips.
A proud graduate of Southview High School, Class of 1979, he was deeply involved in organizing his high school reunions and truly enjoyed connecting with his former classmates. Steven had a lifelong passion for baseball, starting in Little League and continuing through high school, where he excelled as a pitcher. After high school, he joined a softball league, playing alongside his brothers and continuing his love of the game. From 1979 to 1995, he worked in his family’s construction business, William Phillips International, He was also a member of the Bricklayers Allied Craftsman Local Union 5, where he took pride in his work and the trade he helped build. Steven dedicated much of his career to public service as a Correctional Officer for the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office from July 1997 until an accident led to his early retirement in October 2006.
Steven had a deep appreciation for antiques, finding joy in restoring pieces of the past and exploring antique shows, shops, and flea markets. He was an avid fan of Cleveland sports, and had a special fondness for classic television shows from the 1950s and 1960s. His happiest moments were spent on the porch, watching the birds and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
He is survived by his wife, Carmella (née Davis) Phillips; his children, Amber, Michael, and James Phillips; his mother, Virginia Phillips; and his siblings, John (Rhonda) Phillips, Brenda Brest, Debbie (Ed) Conn, and William (Nancy) Phillips. He was preceded in death by his father, William Phillips, and his brother-in-law, Dave Brest.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, March 3, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral center, with interment at Ridge Hill Memorial Park.
