Tommie R. Maegle's Obituary
Tommie Lessiter Maegle (nee Knuckles) passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on August 25, 2015 at the age of 87. A longtime resident of Amherst, Tommie was born in 1928 in London, Kentucky and later moved to Detroit, Michigan with her parents and twin sisters, Jacqueline and Edwina, who were also her best friends.
After high school she relocated to Ohio where she met and married her first love, Donald Lessiter. The couple eventually settled in Amherst where they were blessed with 5 daughters and enjoyed a wonderful marriage and friendship that ended prematurely with Donald’s passing in 1968. Tommie always took great pride in “her girls” and considered them her greatest accomplishment. The family share fond memories of Mom’s love of music and their many times singing together as she proudly looked on and directed.
Tommie met Howard Maegle, her future husband, while volunteering at Amherst Hospital. Howard brought Tommie great joy as the two traveled the world together and spent 25 years in wedded bliss.
Throughout her life Tommie was blessed with many friends. She was an avid duplicate bridge player and was part of the same bridge group for over 30 years. She was also a dedicated member of the Amherst United Congregational Church of Christ where she served in many capacities throughout the years.
Tommie is survived by her five daughters: Jane Gould (Wally) of Lower Salem, OH; Peggy Long (Chuck) of Perrysburg, OH; Elaine Zientarski (Mike) of Amherst, OH; Laura Lessiter (Colleen Cavanaugh) of Hercules, CA; Linda Soltesz of North Olmsted, OH, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Mercy Hospital and New Life Hospice for caring for their mother in her final days.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 28, 2015 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, August 29th. from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst.
