Walter Russell Szanto's Obituary
Walter Russell Szanto, age 85, of Vermilion passed away Friday, June 26, 2015 at Mercy New Life Hospice.
He was born on March 28, 1930 in Lorain, Ohio to Joseph and Eleanor (nee Pandy) Szanto. Walter was raised in Lorain and for the past 30 years has been a resident of Vermilion. He attended the Lorain City Schools and served in the United States Air Force from 1946- 1949.
Walt made his career as a Senior Laboratory Technician at B.F. Goodrich, in Avon Lake, for 40 years, retiring in April 1993.
Walt had a full life enjoying family, any outdoor activity and traveling. He became a certified hang glider pilot in his early 50’s and experienced his passion of free flight.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda (nee Kutza) Szanto; his daughters, Stephanie (Jim) Dew, of Avon Lake and Sandra Hamilton, of Lorain; grandsons, Wayne Jameson, Dustin Hamilton and Colin Hamilton; sister-in-law, Emma Szanto, of SanDiego, California; and many nieces, nephews, and close extended family members.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Eleanor Szanto; step-mother, Bertha Szanto; brothers, Joseph, John Szanto; sisters, Ireen (Clifford) Szanto-Schwert, Ella (Steve) Szanto- Vargo, Margaret Szanto-Braegger; step-brother, Andrew Chonko; step-sisters, Margaret (William) Huber and Wilhelmina (Eugene) Pall.
The Szanto family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 1st. at 11:00 a.m. Raymond Holland will be the officiate. Interment will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. Military Honors will conducted by the Lorain Honor Guard.
