Offer my Condolences to the Family of Carl..So Sorry for your loss. Carl and I had common interest in Classic Cars and Corvettes. He was a Great Guy and again am Sorry for your loss.
Joyce and family, I am shocked and SO sorry to read this morning of Carl’s passing. It had not been too long ago that I had seen him at Giant Eagle, and I did not know he had been ill. I always thought the world of Carl and I often saw him and talked with him at local classic car events showing that one-of-a-kind blue truck that my son and I loved. He *always* asked about my dad, my mom, and my brother Ron (who had cerebral palsy) while all three were still living, genuinely interested in how they were doing.
Unfortunately, I will be traveling on Saturday and so will not be able to attend the service and pay my respects, as I would otherwise surely do on behalf of my father and myself. That said, if you are not familiar with the following story, let me speak to Carl’s character and devotion a moment. He of course worked for my dad way back in the day and became fond of him, and they became good friends. When my parents began to get overwhelmed with medical bills for my brother’s care, they exhaustively searched for assistance from United Way (which might have been United Funds at that time) and countless other charitable entities, but the only organization that agreed to help our parents was Catholic Charities… and we were not even Catholic. Fast forward to shortly afterward when Carl was offered a well-paying job at the steel plant in Lorain, and as he was completing his paperwork he discovered there was (at least at that time) a mandatory payroll deduction for United Way. He brought it to their attention and said that he would not sign for that deduction because United Way would not help his friend Wayne and Wayne's son in a time of great need. After much discussion and in that the plant would not change the requirement, he walked away from the opportunity due to his devotion to my dad and his belief in doing the right thing.
This innate desire and devotion to selflessly help others who are compromised and/or in emergency situations certainly served him well in his long-time capacity with the City of Elyria Fire Department. I believe Carl made a huge difference in this life, doing the right thing and sacrificing his life for the well-being of others – what a wonderful testimony and an admirable legacy of example for those who knew and loved him and will miss him.
Have many great memories of working with Carl. He will be missed.
Rest in Peace Brother.
