How do you put 87 years into words or pictures? As one of Ethel’s grandchildren, It is definitely a difficult task. I remember many good times, from the time when I was a small child to present day which of course are too many to list. I spent a lot of time with Grandma Ethel and enjoyed our time together.
No words will ever express fully what she meant to me or anyone else because that is impossible. She was more than just a caring mom to her children, more than a loving wife, she was a grandma to myself, my sister, and my brother, and great grandma to four beautiful children that knew her and she was able to watch grow through the years. Grandma Ethel was also a sister, a sister-in-law, an aunt, a friend, a cousin, a daughter, and most importantly a child of God.
She loved Christmas and decorating for every holiday that exists! Grandma loved to stop by Wendy’s on our way home from Kohl’s to grab a chili or a “single.” Not many grandma’s would wear toe rings and bright blue nail polish, but my Grandma did. When I lived with her for a little while, she and I would have dinner together after work and sometimes talk about her childhood and she would answer all my questions to help preserve our family history. I would help her with her makeup and hair and wanted to always look nice wherever she went. During one particular interview, I asked her, “What do you want people to remember you most by?” And her answer was simply, “That I was a good person and tried to do right by everyone.”
I know Grandma not only wanted her children, but also everyone she knew to know God and believe that He is here with us throughout out lives, through good times and struggles. I know Grandma is in Heaven now and although we’ll all miss her in our own ways, we’ll see her again. I think this song says it perfectly….
“Face to Face” by Zach Williams
Oh, I'm a traveler far from home
I get lost but I press on
There's a mansion in streets of gold
Where I belong
Yes, there's a day coming soon
Where the old will be made new
And Heaven's glory shines like the morning
Before our eyes
When we all see Jesus
When we all see Jesus
No more sickness, no more madness, no more pain
When we all see Jesus face to face
I love you Grandma! I know you are at peace! Love, Sara
