Irene M. Smith's Obituary
Irene M. Smith (nee Flaczynski), age 94, of Lorain, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 17, 2021.
She was born on June 17, 1927 in Lorain, and is a 1945 graduate of Lorain High School. She then continued her education at the Maumee Valley Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated with her diploma in 1948. Her career in nursing included a position at Ford Motor Co., as an Occupational Health Nurse. She was also an emergency room nurse, surgical nurse and Director of Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital, in Lorain, until her retirement. After retirement, she and her husband, Thomas, moved to Englewood, Florida, where they lived for 20 years. After the death of her husband, she moved back to Lorain to be closer to her family here.
Irene was a member of The Church of St. Peter in Lorain. She will be remembered for her love of shopping. More so though, her family was always her biggest pride and priority. She devoted her time to being a loving wife, outstanding mother, and very proud grandmother and great grandmother. Her love of family extended down to Florida where she always enjoyed entertaining and hosting all her family and friends.
Irene is survived by her loving children, Denise Flynn, Thomas G. Smith Jr. (April), Renee (Jeff) Coughlin, and Peter J. Smith, grandchildren, Jason (Laura), Erin (Jessica), Katey, Ian (Katie), Sean (Kayla), and Maggie, and her great grandchildren, Zoe, Jacob, Olivia, and Anthony.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Smith, Sr., parents, Peter and Helen (nee Stalinski) Flaczynski, and her brothers, Lawrence and Alvin.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Her funeral services will be held at a later date at St. Raphael Church in Englewood, FL. Her inurnment will also take place in the burial gardens at St. Raphael Church.
