John Goodell's Obituary
John Wesley Goodell, age 84, of Amherst, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2011 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph.
He was born on April 29, 1927 in Lorain, Ohio to the late Lewis Gates and Glen (nee Reese) Goodell and was a graduate of Lorain High School. In 1944, while still in high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his Country during World War II as a Fireman. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946.
He began his working life as a truck driver for Norwalk Truck Lines for 9 years and then went on to work as a Maintenance Supervisor at Lorain Products, retiring in 1991 after 35 years of service.
John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst and of the Senior Fellowship Group at the Lorain Senior Center. He enjoyed wood working and building lawn mowers.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Katherine Goodell (nee Miechur); sons, James (Sue) Goodell, of Vermilion, Mark (Linda) Goodell, of Sheffield Lake, David (Teresa) Goodell, of Beaverton, Oregon and Michael (Ellen) Goodell, of Wilmington, NC; daughter, Mary D. Crawford, of Lorain; grandchildren, Rebecca Lengyel, Jeanine Kent, Matthew Goodell, Melissa Goodell, Shane Kincer, Brian Reinhart, Lara Reinhart, Megan Fanta, Raymond Liebenguth, Matthew Liebenguth; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Arnow, of Salt Lake City, Utah.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lewis James Goodell.
The Goodell Family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Closing prayers will be said in the Funeral Center on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 9:15 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Fr. Lawrence Martello, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst. Military Honors will be conducted by the VFW Post 451 and The American Legion Post # 30.
The family suggest contributions be made in memory of John, to St. Joseph Catholic Church or New Life Hospice, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44135.
