Roger S. Farr's Obituary
Roger S. Farr, a dedicated educator, revered coach, avid golfer, and beloved husband, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was 82 years old.
Born on March 8, 1941, in Lorain, Ohio, Roger was the son of Alvin and Mary Beth Farr (nee Rogers). He attended Lorain City Schools and graduated from Lorain High School in 1959. Roger pursued higher education at Ohio University, where he not only earned his degree but also made an indelible mark as a football player. His contributions led the 1960 football team to secure the National Small College Championship, earning them a prestigious place in the Ohio University Sports Hall of Fame. Throughout his life, Roger cherished his time at Ohio University and remained a devoted and proud Bobcat.
After graduating in 1963, Roger embarked on a remarkable 33-year teaching career within the Lorain City Schools. He didn't just confine himself to teaching; he coached football, track, cross country, and girls' softball, leaving an enduring impact on countless students and athletes he mentored. Post-retirement, Roger ventured into real estate, demonstrating his adeptness by fostering strong relationships with his clients. He flourished in his real estate career, starting with Realty One and culminating at Howard Hanna.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Roger was passionate about golf, a passion ignited during his days as a caddy at Cherry Ridge. He relished exploring various golf courses across Northeast Ohio and Naples, Florida. His golfing prowess was evident in achieving three holes in one, a testament to his dedication and skill. Roger also cherished winters in Naples, forging connections with both new and old friends, creating lasting memories.
His interests extended to traveling, reading, attending sporting events, and relishing cruises with cherished family and friends. Roger was an active member of numerous organizations, including the National Education Association, Lorain Educational Association, Lorain Sports Hall of Fame, University Club, Lorain Elks, and Fellowship Supper Club. He was a member of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, in Amherst.
Roger is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Rebecca (nee Fossie); his daughter, Sherrill (Roger) Goodlive (nee Farr); sisters-in-law, Debbie Fossie and Joanne Farr; daughter-in-law, Sharon Farr; grandchildren, Andrew, Graham (Erin), and Dylan Farr, Marissa Goodlive, and Kaitlin (Aaron) Goodlive; as well as 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by nephews Michael and Kurt Farr, Kevin and Kent Griffin, James and Joshua Fossie, nieces Jeanne Rosecrans, and Kimberly Griffin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Mary Beth; his son, Andrew; his brother, Dwight Farr; his sister, Marsha Griffin; brother-in-law, James Fossie; and nephew, Garrett Farr.
Roger will be remembered as a kind, caring, and vivacious individual who lived life to its fullest. His absence will be deeply felt by the many lives he touched.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center. Funeral services will take place on Friday, December 29, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, 379 S. Main Street, Amherst. Reverend Brian Russell, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
In honor of Roger's memory, the family suggests contributions be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in lieu of flowers. Roger's legacy of compassion, dedication, and zest for life will forever resonate within the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
