Thomas "Tom" Carvour's Obituary
Thomas “Tom” Carvour, 80, of Amherst, Ohio, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 24, 2024. Tom was born August 11, 1944, in Souli, Corinth, Greece, to parents Vlasios and Panagiota (Pearl) Carvour, and immigrated with his family to the United States through Ellis Island at the age of 6 to live in Lorain, Ohio.
He was a proud graduate of Admiral King High School, Class of 1963, and The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1971. Tom started working at the age of 11 in his parents’ restaurant, The 3 Star, South Lorain, Ohio. He was a cashier, waiter, and eventually short order cook. He continued to work weekends in the restaurant through college.
His college years were interrupted when he volunteered to join the United States Army to proudly serve in the Vietnam War in 1965. After his basic training at Fort Rucker, AL, he was deployed to Vung Tau, Vietnam, where he was aviation flight operations coordinator/dispatcher. Later he was transferred to Heidelberg, Germany where he was flight operations facilitator European APO and was honorably discharged in 1971 having earned the grade of E-5 (Sergeant).
Upon returning to the United States, Tom completed his degree and began working in Columbus, Ohio in finance before moving to Washinton, D.C. to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Tom eventually moved back to Lorain, Ohio and worked for The United States Treasury Department as an Internal Revenue Agent reaching the level of Senior Commissioners’ Directors Representative/Group Manager (G-13) for the Lorain County Office, retiring in 2007.
A lifelong member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Tom served his church community as President of The Board of Trustees, helping to establish a trust for the church; Treasurer of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) Chapter #144; and Treasurer and member of the church choir. In the community, Tom volunteered with the Amherst Office of Aging delivering Meals on Wheels and helping seniors with tax concerns.
Tom was married to the love of his life, Marianne Carvour, for 39 wonderful years, having had a whirlwind destination wedding in Toms’ home village of Souli, Greece. Together they shared a life of love, commitment, and dedication to God, family and each other. He is survived by his brother James “Jim” Carvour; and sister Helen (John G.) Asimou; brothers-in-law Nicholas N. (Alata) Kallas and Christopher (Lori) Kallas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff and healthcare providers at Metro Health, Cleveland, OH, Elara Caring, New Life, and Mercy Health, Lorain, OH for their loving care, comfort, and support.
The family will receive friends Thursday, August 29, 2024, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Lorain, with Father Christopher Zaferes officiating. Internment will take place following the service at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain where military honors will be bestowed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Tom’s name to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain, OH 44053 or to Cherished Cockers Rescue, 8216 Rushton Dr., Mentor, OH 44060.
